Addison Rotary Meeting October 10, 2007 Members present:
Guests: Brian Smith, Good Samaritan Meeting opened at with the Pledge, Rotary motto, prayer and lunch. Founders' Day Parade - Don Hendricks thanked Jim Krage for the use of his '55 Chevy convertible and Bill Schaub for participating and providing the magnet signs for the car for the parade. Mayor's Ball - George Ellefsen will provide 2 savings bonds for the silent auction. Sohila Parsi, Matt Delawder and Steve Morrison will also provide items for the auction items are needed. Raffle tickets must be sold and money returned to Don Hendricks by the end of the month. Matt Delawder, George Ellefsen and Janis Jordan will sell car raffle tickets at the Addison Trail football game on October 12. Details are being worked out to start an InterAct club at Addison Trail Craig Hjorth introduced the guest speaker, Kay McKeen, of S.C.A.R.C.E. ( S chool and C ommunity A ssistance for R ecycling & C omposting E ducation) an organization founded by her in 1990. Kay was recently recognized as one of the 10 most influential environmentalists by the Daily Herald. She began the Earth Flag program which recognizes schools and businesses for their environmental efforts. Kay spoke about electronics recycling, the hazardous waste collection site in Naperville, the development of lower-energy, longer-lasting light bulbs, gym shoes recycling and the need for and progress being made in creating uses for agricultural waste. Zero waste is the goal and people need to be educated and change their habits in order to reach that goal. In the U.S. water consumption must be reduced by 15% by 2005. Consumers who unplug unnecessary electric items they can reduce 'phantom power'. Conservation is the key. Kay is available to meet with organizations or businesses who wish to improve their environmental awareness and practices. Cal George will be getting information about the Rotary fruit sale soon.
