Noel Rolle from the Addison Park District was introduced and welcomed as a guest. Linda Gates was the guest speaker. A member of the LaGrange Rotary, Linda is heavily involved in Rotary youth programs and is the chairman of New Generations. She spoke to the group about Rotary's Job 1 youth worker initiative. Job 1 involves offering internships that include vocational training and mentoring from a Rotary member. Job1 helps local Rotary clubs by giving them the opportunity to get to know area youth; by giving them the opportunity to meet with local business to solicit jobs/donations; and by giving them the opportunity to share information about Rotary. Summer internships are to be offered for 8 weeks, 40 hours/week for $8/hour. The challenge is to find jobs/tasks that fit that requirement in the suburban setting. Rotary clubs are being encouraged to think about creative ways that student internship jobs could be set up, perhaps as a joint effort between two organizations. Under this program, employers have the opportunity to interview prospective students. The local Rotary club would need to screen students applying for internships and the club would need to assign a mentor. A Job 1 summit meeting is being held on October 22 at Moraine Valley . Raffle tickets were sold. Don Weiss won the weekly raffle. The meeting adjourned at 1:12 p.m. |
