Thanks to the Rotary for providing them with circus tickets. Matt Chada shared information about the Northern Illinois Food Bank which serves 13 counties, including DuPage County , where it distributes the greatest percentage of its food (5 million pounds of food last year). There has been a 35% surge in demand at the food pantry level with need cutting across all demographics. The Food Bank is headquartered in St. Charles and has branches in Rockford and Lake County . They are currently building a new distribution center in Geneva , which will allow for greater and more efficient storage and distribution of food. The food bank has seen great benefits by recovering food at the retail level---saving millions of pounds of food that would otherwise be disposed of. Meat is frozen at the stores and transported to the food bank. The new distribution center will have larger freezers to store frozen foods. The Northern Illinois Food Bank is the 2 nd largest of the eight food banks in Illinois . They utilize mobile pantry trucks to serve areas that are underserved by local pantries. The truck allows them to distribute food within 2 hours, saving pantries from having to find space to store the food. A mobile pantry was used for the Addison Switchboard food distribution in May. The food bank also runs a Youth Nutrition Program providing: Summer lunches Afterschool snacks Super supper – cold food with meal equivalent nutrition Backpack – full of food for them and their family The food bank is always in need of volunteers and financial assistance—for their capital campaign and for the purchase of trucks that are needed to pick up and deliver food to area pantries. The food bank is funded by private donations, foundations, direct mail solicitation of individual donors, and federal funding through the farm bill. Matt invited the club to come for a tour, to hold a meeting and volunteer some time. The meeting adjourned at 1:28pm |
